Search your mail

Reading & organizing

Search looks through all your accounts at once. Type a few words, or use search operators such as from: or has:attachment to narrow the results. Results show the newest first.

Steps

Desktop

  1. Press ⌘F (Ctrl+F on Windows and Linux), or click the search button.
  2. Type what you're looking for in Search emails....
  3. To narrow the results, click the chips under the search box: the date, From, Has file, Unread, the folder (Anywhere) and the account (All accounts).

iPhone, iPad & Android

  1. Tap the search button at the top of your mail list.
  2. Type in Search in mail.
  3. To narrow the results, tap Unread, Starred, Attachments or Last 7 days, or tap an operator under SEARCH BY to add it.

Search operators

Type an operator straight before the word or address it applies to, with no space after the colon. You can combine several.

Good to know

  • Search runs on your mail provider's servers, so it needs an internet connection.
  • Gmail understands every operator above. For Outlook accounts, Newton searches only the Inbox.
  • IMAP accounts understand from:, to:, subject:, is:, has:attachment, in:, before:, after:, older_than: and newer_than:. Other operators search for the word as plain text. On a phone, an IMAP search looks in up to 10 folders.
  • Trash and Spam aren't searched unless you add in:trash or in:spam.
