Working at a startup: The only 3 things that matter

With all the freedom, perks, and the possibility of becoming rich soon, working at a startup does sound sexy. But, the most important thing is not to work at a startup, but to work with the right one. I have a no-nonsense, three-point formula on how to choose your next job, or evaluate if the current one sucks.

#1 Does it get you out of bed?

Do what you love. The product you work on and the challenges it throws at you should get you out of bed. Life is too short to waste time on mundane tasks and lacklustre products. We need not leave a dent in the universe, but the feeling that our work adds some value is satisfying enough.

If you find it difficult to get out of the bed inspired, it’s time for you to start looking out. Your current job sucks. Move on.

#2 It’s all about the people

Nothing is more frustrating than annoying co-workers or an obnoxious boss. A toxic work environment is something you should avoid irrespective of the perks. It just makes your life miserable.

Working at a startup, you spend more time with your colleagues than your family. So, better make sure they are worth your time. Get to know the team before you join. If possible, work with them for a week or a month before you decide. Good startups are flexible.

#3 Money matters

If someone says that money doesn’t matter, they are either bullshitting or rich.

Startups have to attract bright talent to progress. So, you have the bargaining chip. Make sure you are paid what you’re worth. Negotiate hard, ask for equity. It’s good to own a part of the company; it motivates you more.

All three boxes must be ticked if you wish to take up a new job. Assess your current job against these three points every six months. If any of the boxes remain unchecked, move on.
