Turn on read receipts

Supercharge

Read receipts tell you when someone opens an email you sent. They're off until you turn them on, either for every email or for one email at a time.

Steps

Desktop

  1. Open Settings: press ⌘, on Mac, or Ctrl+, on Windows and Linux.
  2. Go to the Supercharge tab.
  3. Under Read Receipts, switch on Enable read receipts by default.

To change it for one email, click Read receipt: off at the top of the compose window. It changes to Read receipt: on.

iPhone, iPad & Android

  1. Open the menu and tap the Settings gear at the bottom.
  2. Tap Supercharge, then Read receipts.
  3. Switch on Enable read receipts by default.

To change it for one email, tap the eye button in the compose toolbar. The eye is highlighted when read receipts are on for that email.

Good to know

  • Read receipts work with Gmail, Outlook and IMAP accounts.
  • With Outlook accounts you see whether the email was opened, but not which recipient opened it.
  • Some mail apps, such as Apple Mail, load images automatically. An email can show as Seen before anyone has actually read it.
  • Newton never shows you where a recipient was when they opened your email.
